The OO group was founded in the early 1970's. A space in the club room 20ft x 7ft was allocated for our use and we also were allowed permission to build extension baseboards on a portable basis to improve running capabilities. Over the years a number of layouts were build, the current one being the last of four.
Various type of baseboard design were tried and a plywood designe was finally adopted which proved to be stable, flat and did not twist or warp in use. Because of the wide regional interests of the members, a freelance design was adopted ad this policy has enure to-date. Operation is currently analogue, but we are making adjustments to allow for DCC working as well.
Typical running evenings consist of GWR-Souther, LMS-LNER, BR Steam and BR Diesel. The track plan consists of two through stations and one small terminus and additional goods and parcel facilities. Up to four operators can work at once on the main layout with an additional three operators on a portable extension with passenger and goods facilities and in engine depot.
When the whole railway is extended, as at exhibitions, it covers a space of 20ft x 26ft, which is quite impressive and has drawn a lot of interest. Sadly the layout now requires refurbishment to exhibition standards and the clup is now looking to recruite new modellers to make this happen.
